Green Construction
"Green" is a term that often refers to environmental awareness and preservation. "Green construction" implies using renewable building materials, and consuming less energy in the production, transport, and installation of those materials, and also in the post-construction regular daily use of the project. In the case of the Village, there are two levels to be considered: the site as a whole, and the individual buildings.
It is too early in the design process to say specifically what "green" features will be incorporated in the final plans. But we all know that energy consumption is a huge issue in today's world, and directly affects the household budget of every citizen, as well as living conditions for society as a whole. So we will create buildings that use energy as efficiently as possible, while not sacrificing comfort, convenience, and reliability.
The neighborhood as a whole will also be designed to minimize needs for additional energy inputs. For example, on-site management of stormwater, emphasizing groundwater recharging, will reduce load on the older storm drain system in the vicinity, and reduce or eliminate the need to upgrade pipelines, pumps, etc.
LEED certification is the current best metric for characterizing "green" neighborhoods and buildings. LEED principles are rapidly becoming mainstream design and construction considerations. We hope to attain LEED certification both of the Village as a whole, and the individual buildings within it.
We will not solve the Global Warming problem with this small village, but we will do our part.
