Sustainability Features
With design not beginning until late 2007, we cannot yet be specific about sustainability (green construction) features. The design team will carefully evaluate many alternatives for efficiency, function, and cost, including:
Sitework
- Concrete from the CYA building demolition will be crushed into gravel and re-used under new roads and slabs.
- Bio-swales will filter and return most rainfall directly to the ground. This can replace much of a piped drainage system, saving money and keeping the groundwater table higher.
- Pervious concrete may be used as another means of lessening the need for piped storm drains.
- Trees will greatly enhance atmospheric CO2 absorption and provide shade.
- There may be a recycling center for cans, bottles, paper, and organic waste.
- Community gardens will lessen residents’ dependence on food transported long distances.
