On Friday, December 10, a groundbreaking was held to showcase a new, multiparty child development center for faculty and staff of Sacramento State as well as employees of SMUD and UC Davis Health.
Purchased by UEI in 2019 and located at 6011 Folsom Blvd., the new center will accommodate up to 207 children with 17,000 square feet of indoor and 15,000 square feet of outdoor space including a playground and children’s garden.
The center is expected to open in fall 2022.
“Finally, child care for our faculty and staff, many of whom have struggled to find affordable, high-quality care near campus,” said Sac State President Robert S. Nelsen, who spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony.
He called the project “life-changing” for employees and said it will deepen and strengthen Sacramento State’s impact on the region.
The ceremony, attended by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, heralded the transformation of a 1960s building that once housed a hobby shop and ballroom-dance studio.
“To have these three giants come together to address one of Sacramento’s greatest societal needs is huge for the city of Sacramento,” Steinberg said.
Additionally next year, a portion of the building will also be developed as a training facility for Sacramento State’s gymnastics team, which currently commutes an hour a day to train in Elk Grove.
